Whenever I give a talk about the book, I most frequently get questions or comments about the research that went into it. I most always respond that any idiot can research. Synthesizing all of that material into a narrative is by far the harder of the two challenges.
Be that as it may, research is still the fundamental job of the historian — especially the research of primary sources. These sources can be letters, operational reports, photographs, newsreels, articles — anything contemporaneous to the event you’re writing about.
In this gallery, I’ve tried to demystify the research process and also to show you a sample of some of the foundational documents on which the book is based.
